SHELBY, OH-  The Shelby Whippets enter week eight at 7-0.  No team they've played to this point has been able to stay close and in all seven games, the Whippets have ended the contest with a running clock.  Suffice to say, coach Erik Will likes the way his team is playing.

"I like where we are at.  I think our ceiling is still yet higher.  There are some things that when we watch the film we can clean up or we have deficiencies that we have.  It's our job as coaches to get those cleaned up because somewhere along the way deficiencies get exposed."

"I still think we have a lot more to improve on, say senior quarterback Brennan Armstrong.  That's why each game I think we get better every week.  Really we won't hit our potential until the end of the season.  Our goal is to get to the state championship.  Our potential I really don't know what it can go up to."

"I feel when we get to the most competitive games that's when the full aspect will come out and the talents will come out as well," says wide receiver Carter Brooks.

This week the Whippets will try to continue their best start since 1998 when they host 4-3 Port Clinton.  "We're looking at this as a true championship conference game," says Will.  "Because they (Port Clinton) only has one loss in the league and they are gonna try and come in here and get a win.  If they get a win they are right back in the race."

Asked if anything had him concerned about the Redskins, Armstrong responded, "Not really.  For us, as a squad, we gotta make sure we're ready and we control how we play.  If we do that we'll be fine."

Two seasons ago the Whippets finished at 5-5.  Some thought that season the team underachieved.   Asked if he could envision a start like this two years ago Brooks didn't think so right away.  "Not at the moment.  But if I were to step back and looked at it and seen what we had I would have said, "Yeah this is a team."  We have some players in my class and the class under us that could have done something big.  That's our goal right now just bring one home to the community.  If we could bring home a "ship" (championship)  that would be sweet."
